Crafts

Richard Houghton is NAYC's Countywide Craft Worker. He has been taking crafts to youth groups for over thirty years. The wealth of experience that he has gained over these two decades provides a wonderful opportunity for young people to explore their imaginations and develop their creative side.

We ask for a voluntary donation of £5 towards petrol costs. Suggested cost per item can be found below.

The range of crafts available is extensive and includes:

Embossing

This craft uses a wide range of rubber stamps pressed onto a transparent ink pad. The image is then stamped onto paper sprinkled with embossing powder and held under a heat gun to create a glossy image. They make great mobiles.

Price: 30p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables and power source.

Soap Making

This incorporates soap carving in which simple white images are carved out of soap tablets. These are then laid in a round mould into which coloured liquid transparent soap is poured over them. This results in a usable bar of coloured soap enclosing the white carving. Good for presents.

Price: 40p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables and a microwave.

Glass Painting

Another extremely popular craft. This involves copying/drawing designs onto either glass or a glass substitute using black outliner. The outlines are then filled with transparent glass paint. Sticky tabs are then added so that the pieces can be attached to a window or mirror where they catch the light.

Price: 40p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables.

Magic Maize

This is an aamzing craft where you can make both collage pictures and free standing models by sticking noodles together using water. This is a fun novelty craft and the possibilities are endless.

Sand Art Bracelets

In great demand. These are tubular bracelets filled with layers of different coloured sands in any combination with push in stoppers.

Hama Beads

This activity creates coaster sized patterns and pictures by placing various different coloured tubular shaped beads onto a plastic pegboard and arranging them into a chosen design. These are then ironed which sticks the beads together. The finished shapes can then be used in a variety of decorative and practical ways.

Price: 30p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables and a power source.

Earring making

These are dangling earrings for pierced ears only, although clip attachments (not supplied) can be used instead. The earrings are made by threading a wide variety of beads onto headpins which are then attached to kidney wires.

Price: 35p per pair.
Equipment needed: Tables Only

Candle Making

The candles are made by puring coloured waxes into moulds in layers with the wick held in the middle leaving each layer to dry before the next is added. The young people end up with something really useful and eyecatching. This craft can be combined with other activities as there are long periods of waiting involved between the layers drying.

Price: 45p per candle.
Equipment needed: Cooker with 4 rings, tables and sink.

Plaster Cast Models

Animal shapes (including dinosaurs) are cast in Plaster of Paris using rubber moulds. The plaster we use is quick drying, which takes about half an hour, this allows just enough time to get the models painted in the same session. It also gives young people something effective to take home.

Price: 35p per model.
Equipment needed: Tables and water.

Kite Making

This is a brilliant activity for the lighter evenings and the kites fly extremely well in the slightest breeze. They are made with colored polythene and sticks and can be made and flown on the same eveing, weather permitting. They can also be decorated if required.

Price: 50p per kite.
Equipment needed: Plenty of large tables.

Glass Engraving

Designs are scratched onto glass substitute using a diamond tipped pen. The image can either be traced from a picture or drawn freehand from the imagination. The engraving is completed by rubbing silver metallic paste into the image which greatly enhances the finished result. Owing to the availability of glass this craft is only offered to small groups.

Price: 40p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables only.

Foil Pressing

Squares of gold, silver or copper foil are attached onto raised plastic moulds and pressed with a tool to create 3 dimensional pictures. The image can then be rubbed with black paint to give it an old look or painted with a brush in the normal way using poster paint.

Price: 50p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables only.

Sand Art

Very effective pictures made by sprinkling different coloured sands into areas that have first been painted with glue. All pictures are especially designed and pre printed onto card in order to give guidance at the gluing stage. There are 14 colours of sand available. Can be a bit messy, but the kids enjoy it a lot.

Price: 20p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables only.

Scratch Art

This craft uses specially produced card over which a picture is placed, it is then scored to make an indentation to transfer the outline of the picture onto the card. The black surface of the card is then scratched away to reveal either multi-coloured or holographic effects underneath. The pictures are mounted onto white card which look really great.

Price: 35p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables only.

Encaustic Art

Highly spectacular fantasy pictures created by spreading wax onto glossy card using especially designed irons, after which they can be drawn onto with a heated pen. These are very popular, always produce a good result and no two are ever the same.

Price: 35p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables near a power source.

Quilling

Traditional style collage craft where thin strips of coloured machine produced paper are curled into a variety of different shapes and stuck onto a background. You can make either very simple or extremely intricate designs with this craft.

Price: 25p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables only.

Window Cling Mosaics

This is a craft which involves making transparent mosaics with special plastic on an acetate grid. The coloured plastic is pre-cut into squares which, because they are made of special clingy plastic, will stick to both acetate and glass without either glue or tape. Stencils are placed behind the acetate grid which are then copied by placing coloured plastic squares on the acetate to build up the picture.

Price: 30p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables only.

Dip In Fantasy Film

This is a fun craft for everybody to try. It involves making different shaped wire loops and dipping them into tins of different coloured liquid plastic. The plastic sets in 10 minutes after which the shapes can then be tied together in order to create a more varied effect.

Price: 35p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables only.

Sunlight Suncatchers

This is a new silhouette craft using pre-cut black shapes arranged on acetates and covered with sticky backed plastic and to add colour small pieces of window cling are added to the back of the picture. A suction cup is added so the suncatcher can be stuck on a window. Very striking.

Price: 35p each.
Equipment needed: Tables only.

Egg Sculptures

With this craft you can make cute animals and people out of polystyrene eggs and balls. These can then be decorated with pipe cleaners, paint and foam shapes to create really cool free standing models that the young people will love.

Price: 45p per item
Equipment needed: Tables only.

Model Magic

This is a craft in which small clay like midels can be made out of coloured modelling material. Themodels are completely air drying and a wide variety of colours are available. Fun to do, permanent, and far less messy than clay. This material sticks to itself so no need for water.

Price: 35p per model.
Equipment needed: Tables only.

Scratch Light

Price: 50p per item.
Equipment needed: Tables only.

Pyrography

Otherwise known as wood burning, this is a great activity for older age groups. This activity is fully supervised at all times to ensure a safe and fun session for your group.

Price: 30p for 3 cork squares.
Equipment needed: Tables and a power source.
